Retrograde Planets Could Survive Around Binary Stars

By Alisdair Wilkins

Astronomers believed that binary star systems were too volatile to support many planets, because the overlapping gravitational forces of the two stars would pull most planets apart. But one exoplanet 69 light-years away survives just fine… by orbiting the wrong way.

The Nu Octantis system is a binary star system that can be seen in the southern skies, particularly in the higher latitudes around Antarctica. Manfred Cuntz and Jason Eberle, both researchers at the University of Texas-Arlington, propose there’s a planet orbiting the primary star in the Nu Octantis system based on slight wobbles in the star’s movement, which are known to be caused by orbiting planets.

Planets around binary stars aren’t impossible, but they were thought to exist only in very small zones right around one of the two stars, so that the planets were safely away from the destructive influence of the other star. If there is a planet in Nu Octantis, then it’s got to be well outside this safe zone, which raises the very real question of how it is surviving the gravitational pummeling of the other star.

According to their simulations, Cuntz and Eberle have come up with an answer – the planet could indeed exist outside the safety zone, as long as it’s in a retrograde orbit. This means that it’s revolving around the main star in the opposite direction of the second star. So if, say, the second star orbited the primary star in a clockwise direction, then the planet would orbit the primary star counterclockwise. This increases the possible range of orbital stability, allowing the planet to escape gravitational destruction.

Retrograde orbits are rare, and we’ve never seen anything quite like this before in our exploration of extrasolar planets. Still, they’re not unknown, at least in this solar system’s moons – most famously, Neptune’s major moon Triton is in a retrograde orbit, a likely artifact of its previous existence as a massive asteroid in the Kuiper Belt.

If the researchers are right, this greatly expands the amount of planets we could expect to find in binary systems, particularly within potentially habitable zones. That’s particularly good news for our neck of the galactic woods, because most of the star systems in our immediate vicinity are binary stars.

For all those in Southern California, it's been crazy beautiful the last couple of days. It’s getting closer to summer everyone, start getting ready!

On days like this you have to get out of the house and enjoy the sunshine. You’re spending all this money to live here, might as well get something out of it haha. So that’s exactly what we did. Steve, Ronnie, Raf, and I all went to go play a round of golf at the Dominguez Golf Course. (It’s not the Trump Course, but it gets the job done lol).

Ronnie's good at everything, and golf is no exception..

Check out that flawless sky, don't get any better than that.

I know, golf is boring when watching it on T.V., but once you're out there on the course, it’s pretty damn fun. I mean, just look at Raf's face in this pic... lol

Then after you got some good exercise, reward yourself with an incredibly unhealthy hamburger haha.

We went to 5 Guys, which has some awesome burgers, but I hear all this talk that it’s better than In-N-Out. I don’t know if I’m with all that haha. Definitely worth a try if you haven’t been there though.

Thursday March 31, 2011 was a great day for Los Angeles. Aside from Los Lakers' victory in that intense battle against the Dallas Mavericks, the Dodgers defeated the defending champs the San Francisco Giants 2-1 on the Dodger's opening day. Like any other great LA day it started with great weather, great people, and good food. Theres no better feeling than being at a Dodger game with friends and family enjoying the Cali Life. Man, that’s a damn shame. I knew Nate was sick and had been dealing with some serious health issues, but you’re never ready to hear something like this. I kept waiting for him to get healthy and surprise us with a new hit. Unfortunately, this isn’t how things went down…

Hope he’s at peace right now. He left a legacy that touched enormous amounts of lives, what else can you ask for?

I would like to start off by saying coaching the Curtiss Middle School Boys Basketball Team was a really fun experience. We had so much fun during the games and in practice. This team is full of talented athletes that always had myself and the crowd saying "did you see that move".. HA What a great group of kids. I'm soooooo proud of them.

Austin, Texas. A beautiful place full of beautiful ladies and amazing food! Austin is definitely one of those cities that when you travel there you'll find that there is no place like it. Some would say that its a "One in Million." Austin is exactly that. Everything from the night life in downtown to the college scene, there is nothing like southern hospitality.Just like everywhere in the world everybody in Austin has a favorite place to arrive to after a long night of fun, in Austin a breakfast joint by the name of "Juan in a Million" is where all of Austin's locals go to enjoys a hearty southern/mexican breakfast. This place is so amazing that the Travel Channel's own Adam made a visit there and attempted the Don Juan Challenge. I wasn't so brave haha, but still got much love from the locals and Juan (owner).

After already being across the street for the meeting, We figured it was only right we treat our lil hungry stomach's to some delicious chili dogs,hamburgers, chili cheese fries and some other stuff..ha This food is BOMB. It really hit the spot and I Waffles would recommend it to anyone who loves filthy food..ha

I know everybody has their new year’s resolutions going, trying to stay healthy and all, but we are going to have to go against the grain a little bit. We’re about to let you in on a Gardena secret(Pssh not that many people in Gardena even know about it!)

Ahhh yesss Albertitas. Right on good ol’ Gardena Blvd and Western haha. Don’t let the run-down look fool you. (If you look real close you can tell it used to be a Taco Bell many, many years ago lol) It’s one of those spots you wouldn't think is worth trying. Fortunately, the food here is amazing. Actually, wait… We only really know about one thing that they serve here. SUPER NACHOS! It’s quality over quantity folks, what do you want me to say? There’s a reason why we only order Super Nachos lol. Look at this picture…

How can you blame us? Why would anybody order something different after seeing that!? You can barely even see the tortilla chips!! That’s how ridiculous this thing is. Look at all that meat and cheese!

Hopefully, this picture shows off the nachos a little better. Not only do you have the meat and cheese, but the tomatoes, the sour cream, the onion, the guacamole, the salsa. It’s almost too much. It’s definitely too much if you have cholesterol problems, so please stay away if you do…

As for the rest of us, we can afford to eat unhealthy every once in a while. So, if you’re already sick of your resolution, or you just want to eat some insanely bomb Mexican food. Head to Albertitas. You won’t be disappointed, trust me.

This is a coo looking football that Ron tatted on jeff. Jeff played football for Serra High School in Gardena. His love and passion for the sport still remains and this tattoo is just a reminder of how important that game is to him. BTW It's Ron's third tattoo..ha

Jeff's Mexican sugar skull with roses represents not only his ethnicity, but also his family. The red roses around the skull signify important people in his family. Its a cool Tattoo. To me his Tattoo looks like the terminator version of a sugar skull..i think thats dope..ha

GOODBYE 2010!!

WELCOME 2011!!

With the new year ringing in last night, and having an entire day to recover and think about what's important.. I decided it was time for me to get serious. i thought about everything that's been bugging me and there is one things that's been bothering me for years. Hopefully you guys can help me make sense of this whole thing and i can get past it already.

Have you guys ever heard the phrase "The Early Bird gets the Worm"?

I mean of course you have.. Its one of those things that moms say that are supposed to help you learn that getting up early is good for your or something.. Even though at this point parents really don't tell us stuff like this anymore, they'd just yell until we get up. I guess phrases like this nowadays are becoming less and less effective, because we just cant seem to make sense of them anymore. how many times have you actually seen a bird eat a worm right? I've gotten up pretty damn early before.. Still never seen it. Went to school real early and saw a seagull eating throw up once.. but using the phrase "the early seagull gets the throw up" would probably be counterproductive to getting someone to wake up early. But i degress..

So my problem with the "early Bird" phrase is what happens if u get up early and something gets up really early.. I guess in that case it didnt help you to be early didnt it?..

Similarly, what if getting up early and being the first to be there is actually a bad thing.. which is the case with mice.. Now the early bird mouse gets killed and then the late mouse actually gets the cheese.. Give you something to think about doesnt it?

And in my final thought about the "early bird" phrase.. not all of us can be birds. Some of us are worms.. So the early bird gets the worm, but then the early worm just gets eaten.. Well that really sucks. I guess this phrase doesn't work for worms. But if you were a worm, you really don't got a lot going for you anyways.. Living in the dirt and not being able to tell your butt and your face apart is a tough way to live.

And then of course there's this situation.. hah

All kidding aside.. Getting up early in the morning can't always be a good thing. And its not just for everyone. I enjoy burning the midnight oil and working while most people are asleep. Some of the most creative people around were known to be night owls.. Elvis Presley and Winston Churchill to name a couple. Creativity flourishes at night.. look it up.

well well well my eclipse family. i would like to wish you very happy new year!! i would also like to thank all the people in our lives who help us carry on and work as hard as we do. and to all of our friends who constantly showing support you have all really helped us! now 2010 is going to done with and i must say i enjoyed it.. and i would like to leave you guys with some of my favorite memories from this year. because you guys helped make them.

my (ron) 21st birthday in las vegas.. soo much fun. too bad i got kicked out the club for being belligerent! oh well.

tattoo time

Hopefully, you guys like tattoos as much as we do. We feel it would be interesting to show the people out there some of the tattoos of Eclipse. We don't get em to show-off or be cool. Instead, we appreciate art and the meaning behind em. It's no joke getting something on your body for the rest of your life.

Ron did that basketball and eclipse dude himself. He needed practice so he could start tatting us up ha...
Our friend Vicky did the box monster and bubbles. Like Ron, it was her first time tattooing someone. They're two crazy artists.

Ron got his Grandma's name on his chest becuase he loves her =). The name's pretty dope. Milagros Tan. Milagro means miracle in Spanish.

Well, those are Ron's tats. Hope you liked em. I'm sure he's gonna have more done in the future.
